Primers are products suitable for the preliminary treatment of the metal surface and perform the dual task of effectively protecting the substrate from corrosion and allowing adequate adhesion of the entire coating system.
Primers are able to correct the slight imperfections that may be on the surface of the raw metal, making it uniform and thus allowing the finishing enamel to guarantee an optimal aesthetic result. They can be applied by spray, roller or brush directly on the substrate to be coated.
Solventborne primers are the most popular pigmented primers on the market, as this technology has already developed in the last century. They are easy to apply, fast drying and they can be adapted very easily to any type of painting process. The adhesion to the metal substrate is perfect, from the common carbon steel, to galvanised steel, to aluminium, and they protect it from atmospheric agents and corrosion. Before proceeding with its application, the metal must be suitably pre-treated, in order to prepare it to receive subsequent coats of the product, typically enamels and topcoats. Mono or bicomponent primers are available, the use of a hardener combined with the chosen product determines better technical-applicative characteristics than the monocomponent version.
In order to achieve the best result from the application of the primers, Polistuc Metal suggests paying particular attention to the preparation phase of the substrate, in accordance with the indications provided by the international standard UNI EN ISO 12944. Among the most common are sandblasting, mechanical roughening, pickling.
